__Legal Services__
There’s nothing like a visit from a former client to light up this office! Sam stopped by last fall to share that he had been accepted to Georgia Military College, and his visit reminded us how grateful we are to do this work. Four years ago, barely 15 and charged with murder, Sam had nowhere to turn but GJP. We explained the price of his defense right up front: we represent indigent clients who are willing to work, accept counseling or treatment, and pursue their education.
The GJP legal staff discovered new evidence that led to dismissal of his case, and Sam went back to school and earned his high school diploma. Sam checked in a few weeks ago as he entered his second semester of college. Does restorative justice work? ''Statistics and Sams’s story says yes.'' While Sam is building a productive life, nearly two-thirds of his fellow defendants are in prison.
__Social Services__
__Did you know what GJP doesn’t take government funds?__ We’re supported entirely by private groups and individuals. Social services--counseling, substance abuse intervention, educational assistance, job training and placement—are crucial to our clients’ long-term success. Your $35 gift buys much-needed GED/literacy materials; $50 buys software; $100 buys law library research tools. There’s an ever-growing need: last year GJP served over 350 clients, and we’re on track to surpass that number in 2006.
__First Presbyterian Church and Hillside Presbyterian Church__ have partnered with GJP to transport inmates’ family members to visit their loved one in prison. This is in addition to GJP staff members visiting clients in prison on a regular basis. Studies show that when incarcerated persons stay connected to family and community their chances for success upon release increase.
