__LEGAL__
__''Alumni serve our organization and clients well.''__ John Grantham, a former Georgia Justice Project (GJP) undergraduate and legal intern has joined our team. A graduate of the Georgia State University School of Law, John served as a Fulton County Public Defender prior to joining GJP. Since his arrival, he has taken his responsibilities on with full force and opened doors for more client representation. Welcome John.
__''GJP has lessons to share with the world.''__ With almost twenty years of successful work in the community, GJP has begun to receive invitations to talk about our work to schools, commissions, and panels. In June, Executive Director Doug Ammar visited Israel at the invitation of Fordham University and the Stein Center for Ethics. The week-long sojourn included meetings with the Israeli Supreme Court, public defenders, and the Ministry of Justice.
__''What happens after you’ve paid your debt to society?''__ When 44 residents of a local housing authority lost their housing vouchers because of a past criminal record, GJP was asked by the Annie E. Casey Foundation to help restore their benefits. Thanks to the diligent efforts of Lane Dennard, King & Spalding attorneys and staff, and GJP staff 37 residents had their benefits restored—almost 85%.
__SOCIAL__
__''A leader is a dealer in hope.''__ GJP social worker Anthony Sanchez has been dealing hope with our clients since his arrival last summer. After GJP attorneys successfully resolved two accusations against Billie, Sanchez stepped in to bring guidance and encouragement to this young man. This past May, Billie graduated from high school, working, and making great strides on his new life. His success is a reflection of the encouragement made by donors, and his thanks extends to all those who have made this possible.
__''Bon appetite.''__ Betty, a former client, graduates in July from Atlanta Technical College with a culinary arts degree. Years of determination and hard work brought a well-deserved diploma and the ability to support herself and her family with her new career.
__''Moving toward self-sufficiency is important for all of our clients.''__ Recent grants from the Atlanta Women’s Foundation, Publix Supermarket Charities, and Microsoft will enable GJP’s social service staff to assist clients who are preparing to enter the work force. If your company wants to offer a second chance, please contact Julie Smith at 404-827-0027, x22.
__NEW HORIZON LANDSCAPING__
__''The first bottom line.''__ For the first time in its twelve-year history, New Horizon Landscaping (NHL) is “in the black” for the first six months of the year. Thanks customers!
__''The second bottom line.''__ New Horizon Landscaping employs seven employees—five of whom are GJP clients. This compares to three employees at the beginning of 2005. Greater NHL revenue means more employed GJP clients.
__''Leon Smith has been promoted to Maintenance Supervisor!''__ With more than six years of experience with New Horizon Landscaping, Leon knows our customers and their yards better than anyone.
__''The summer is getting hot, so call now to plan for the fall.''__ NHL’s installation team is preparing now for a busy fall. NHL’s installation services include trees, shrubs, sod, drainage, and irrigation. Contact Joe Cooper at 404-827-9880 or joe@gjp.org for a free initial estimate.
__NEWS BRIEFS__
__''Graced by his presence.''__ The Rt. Rev. J. Neil Alexander, Episcopal Bishop of Atlanta, visited GJP in April to help Cindra Brown and Linda Robitscher present the $175,000 check from the Cathedral Antiques Show. This contribution has already allowed our staff to expand our work with juvenile offenders.
__''Break out your bow tie.''__ Stay tuned for an invitation to honor retiring Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Norman S. Fletcher. Justice Fletcher retired in June and later this year GJP will be honoring his distinguished work in our community. If you are interested in serving on the host committee for this reception, please contact David Rocchio at david@gjp.org.
__''Have you visited www.gjp.org lately?''__ Georgia Justice Project’s website highlights our programs, services, and special events. Visitors can read client stories, learn about New Horizon Landscaping, or make a donation.
