__Legal Services__
__''Did you know that eight out of ten people accused of crimes''__ in Georgia can’t afford an attorney? Milo, a stock clerk at Kroger, is one of them. Walking home from work late one night, he was robbed. Milo called the police, who came to the scene and arrested ''him''. Milo was charged with two misdemeanors and jailed for one week. Helpless and confused, Milo reached out to us. Two GJP volunteers, attorneys with Powell Goldstein, took the case to a jury trial and won Milo’s acquittal.
__Social Services__
__''Three GJP clients recently celebrated achievements''__ that once seemed unlikely. Two earned high-school diplomas and the third graduated from technical college with a certificate in culinary skills this summer. Their staunch personal commitment, and support from GJP, made it possible. They’re bursting with pride, and so are we—one young man visited our office three times to show off his diploma.
__''Education and job skills—and the willingness to work for both''__—are a vital component of the GJP/client contract. Recidivism rates for Georgia Justice Project clients are 18.8%, versus 70% nationally.
__New Horizon Landscaping__
__''New Horizon Landscaping, the employment division of GJP, is on track to be in the black!''__ Thanks to director Joe Cooper, NHL now has three full time crews, over 100 regular customers, and a growing profit line. A grant from the Woodruff Foundation will allow NHL to purchase needed vehicles and equipment.
__''The leaves are starting to fall. Let New Horizon Landscaping pick them up!''__ Call Joe Copper today to learn about NHL’s autumn services including leaf removal, tree and shrub plantings, and mulching. Joe can be reached at 404-827-9880.
__''A warm welcome to…''__
__Robin Coggswell__, the latest addition to our legal staff. Robin joins us thanks to the incredible generosity of Mickey Mixson and his colleagues at Bondurant, Mixson and Elmore. She worked in the private sector for 17 years before entering the law.
__Amy Zaremba__, who has been awarded a two-year fellowship from Equal Justice Works in Washington, D.C. In addition to her legal skills, she brings over 10 years of social services experience to the position. Amy’s work at GJP will focus on ending the criminalization of homelessness.
__Justin McMahon, Caleb Starr, Carissa Esmon, and Andrew Behr__, who will be spending the next year at GJP as full-time volunteers through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and Mission Year.
