2019 Summer Intern Reflection – Martha Selph

My favorite parts of my summer at GJP were the field trips we got to take. I found the Medical Examiner’s office, the trip to Montgomery, my jail visit with Atoyia, and our lunch with the Chief Justice particularly memorable and powerful experiences. I enjoyed the responsibility of getting to work the front desk and also getting to chance to go into court with Rachel and Atoyia. I learned a lot from these first hand experiences and they have only encouraged my intentions of applying to Masters of Social Work programs this fall. This internship has given me a new perspective on life but more specifically it has opened my eyes to the many complex layers of the criminal justice system and has taught me about what is working within the system and the countless parts that are ultimately failing. My time at GJP has forced me to step outside of comfort zone and do and see things I never thought I would. It has been an eye opening internship in the best way possible and I am so thankful I got the chance to work here this summer. This organization is an excellent place to work and I am inspired everyday by the attorneys, social workers, and staff employed by GJP.  Thank you for a great summer!
