Georgia’s First Annual Reentry Summit

GJP was invited to sponsor Georgia’s First Annual Reentry Summit on May 9th at the Anderson Conference Center in Macon, GA. Over 600 criminal justice stakeholders were present, from both state agencies and community-based organizations. Keynote speakers conveyed the importance of reentry and rehabilitation in comprehensive criminal justice reform. Governor Deal captured the spirit of the event saying, “We should all be in the business of redemption.”

During the summit, Governor Deal signed key pieces of legislation incorporating the Council on Criminal Justice Reform’s recommendations for 2017. GJP assisted in the development of SB 174, which institutes several probation reforms. Among other vital reforms, the bill gives the Department of Community Supervision the ability to issue Program and Treatment Completion Certificates, with the intent of lowering barriers to housing and employment for people with criminal records.
