We are excited to announce that the language from HB271 which revised the expungement (record restriction) law and passed the House earlier in the legislative session, was included in HB349 –Governor Nathan Deal’s criminal justice package. HB349 passed in the Senate on March 21, 2013 and along with improving the expungement (record restriction) law, the bill also gives judges discretion to depart from mandatory-minimum sentences in drug trafficking and sex offender cases when certain conditions are met. The new expungement law, effective July 1, 2013, will make record expungement/restriction available for more people and create a more efficient process.
