This past weekend, GJP partnered with Fulton County District Attorney, Fani Willis, to hold a record restriction (commonly known as “expungement”) event in Fulton County. Georgia’s new expungement law, which went into effect in January of this year and makes misdemeanor and some pardoned felony convictions eligible for record restriction for the first time in Georgia, the need for expungement services is greater than ever before. Georgia has both the highest number of people on probation and the longest probation sentences – by far. People are often kept on probation long after they have demonstrated they are rehabilitated. To address this issue, Georgia Justice Project (GJP) worked with stakeholders and the legislature to pass SB 105, which was signed into law on May 3, 2021.
