GJP Featured on WABE’s Closer Look with Rose Scott

GJP was featured on WABE’s Closer Look with Rose Scott this week during a 2-part series in which conversations were held with various organizations regarding eviction and the affordable housing crisis in Georgia. GJP attorney Natasha Alladina was interviewed during the second part of the series, where she spoke about the barriers to accessing stable, affordable housing for people with a criminal record – even when an arrest has not resulted in a conviction.

Ms. Alladina discussed the enormous amount of discretion that public and private housing providers have when screening applicants, and highlighted how harsh some some of the criteria for landlords screening applicants can can be, including some allowing no renters with felonies on their record within last 99 years. GJP emphasized the importance of expanding expungement laws in Georgia to allow for the restriction and sealing of old convictions after a certain period of time, allowing people with criminal records better access stable housing.
